Embracing…Neon?

The last time neon colours were ‘in’, I embraced it wholeheartedly, from the bracelets to sweatshirts to ‘jelly’ shoes. It was the 1980s, and I had just turned into a teenager. Neon was cool and I couldn’t get enough of it.  I never thought I’d see neon enter my wardrobe again, especially now that I’m 40. But it has albeit in a very different way.

In my teens, the more neon I wore the better.  Today, it’s more about touches of neon. For example, I’m digging neon lipstick such as MAC’s Viva Glam Nicki Minaj lipstick, a very bright  bubblegum pink. I pair it with MAC More to Love lip liner to deepen the colour a bit and just dab a bit of the lipstick on top.

I never thought I’d get the Nicki Minaj colour but I loved it when a makeup artist at MAC put the combo on me.  It’s a no-holds barred kind of colour. No hiding in the corner with this colour for sure.  I like wearing a bright colour like this with more feminine or delicate clothes such as the lace top I got from H&M recently.

I’ve also become obsessed with the neon yellow-green clothes that I’m seeing more and more of in stores. I now own two pieces of clothing in this colour, including this dress at Jacob on sale for $39.

This is probably the loudest dress I own, and since the dress is already a statement, it’s best to tone down the makeup when wearing it. Here I opted a berry tone on my lip, appropriately called Berry Kiss, one of Mary Kay’s new Fall colours.I also tone down the dress for work by pairing with a black blazer or cardigan.

So there you have it: a look at how I embraced neon in my 40s. I feel uplifted when I wear it…I feel like I could almost dance to Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.  Almost. ;)
