A High Five for High Definition Foundation from MUFE
It’s probably safe to say that the average woman has one go-to foundation that they use daily. For a makeup addict like me, on the other hand, it’s a different story. I have five, yes five foundations, in my current rotation. The newest one that is getting a lot of love from me is Make Up For Ever’s HD Foundation. I’ve been reaching for it almost daily since acquiring it in mid-December. It is one of my new favorite foundations of all time – HG status. For realz.
I tested the foundation as part of the HD Complexion Starter Kit, now available at Sephora for $89. The kit comes with an HD Foundation (matched to your skintone); HD Primer; HD Powder and a mini Kabuki brush. The shade I tested was #127, which is think is pretty good match though maybe a smidgen light and yellowish. For reference I’m an NC37 at MAC and 040 Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua and Chanel Prolumiere. Photographs of me during the holidays with the foundation on didn’t reveal that dreadful eagle neck so I take this as a positive sign the match is good! Being the foundation addict that I am though, I’d still like to try shade #153 which is what Karen at Makeup and Beauty blog wears, and who has a similar skintone as mine.

(Left: no makeup; Middle: with foundation: Right: with foundation, different lighting)
The texture is light and it blends so well whether using your fingers or a brush. Once on, it doesn’t feel like you have makeup on. I use one to two pumps and it covers what I need to cover. What I like about it is that your skin shines through even while providing the coverage. I had read that it photographs beautifully, and I have to say based on the photos from the holidays, it sure does. Check out the picture above where I’m clearly really blotchy in the first photo and smoother in the other photos. Photos have not been retouched at all. Pretty good in my opinion
Along with the foundation, I also used primer. This is the first time for me, and I must say I’m a primer convert. The HD primer is light-weight and oil-free. It helps provide a smooth base for the foundation, keeping it in place all day. I have normal to dry skin so I’m not sure how the primer would fare with oilier skin.
Once the foundation is on, I set it with HD Microfinish Powder, which is made of 100% mineral silica. It not only helps the makeup stay put but also makes the skin look radiant. I never had any issues with the powder photographing white like what we saw with Nicole Kidman and other celebrities in recent times.
Overall, I’m super pumped about the foundation and everything in this kit. It worked very well for me. Two thumbs up.
If you’re interested in finding your HD Foundation shade, MUFE has just launched an interactive shade finder tool. I know buying foundation online can be daunting, but this tool is really useful and easy to use. Check it out here: www.hd.makeupforeverusa.
Already a fan of the foundation? Make Up For Ever is also hosting its first-ever casting call to find the model for its next Unretouched Ad Campaign. To enter, all you have to do is create your own look and submit to Make Up For Ever here. All finalists’ photos will be posted on Facebook and the winner will be flown to NYC for a professional photo shoot in late February.
Who’s tried this foundation?

P.S. I hope you had a happy New Year. I’m currently on vacation still with the family though I hope to be back in full blogging action this week. I’m excited to use my new camera that Santa (a.k.a. my better half) brought me for Christmas. This is the first post where I’m featuring photos using this camera and I have to say, I’m thrilled with the results. I still have to play around with it and the lighting but so far so good. Was Santa good to you this year?

I love this too! When I’m NC30, I use MUFE HD 140.

Hi Jamilla, did you find it hard finding a colour? I found so many options for skin tone. The tool did help narrow it down though.

This foundation has a lot of silicone in it. I broke out in deep, cystic pimples within 2 days of using this product. I’m still dealing with the remaining scars a month later. Just a word of warning, anyone that breaks out from silicones should steer clear of this foundation.

Eeek, that doesn’t sound good Lauren. That’s too bad. This is good info to share for sure. I feel fortunate that it didn’t happen to me. What would you recommend to those who are sensitive to silicone?
Jan 03, 2012 @ 15:36:31
Not a chance! It really is a shame because it went on so nicely. Basically, if anyone has ever reacted to silicones in the past, they should not wear this foundation. Perhaps once in a while, but never 2 consecutive days in a row. If their heart is set on it, they can give it a try. With Sephora’s return policy, they can always just send it back if it doesn’t work

Thanks Lauren. What foundation works for you?
Jan 03, 2012 @ 18:45:38
I am still on the hunt, to be honest. I have Nars Sheer Glow, LM Silk Creme, Estee Lauder Double Wear and MAC Prolongwear on the go. I tend to mix a couple of those together with some moisturizer since they’re all pretty heavy. I don’t really need a tonne of coverage for day to day wear. I cheat on my foundations all the time, and I’m constantly trying things out.

I’ve tried this and liked it very much. It really is lightweight and gives a flawless finish. I really liked how it photographed too. I just haven’t gone back to it after finishing the bottle because I have so many other foundations to finish :s But I think I will go back to it when my collection dwindles down! I’m an NC35 in MAC and am #125 in MUFE.

Thanks Donna Marie. I hear you about foundations. I have so many to go through.

I’m glad you’re liking the HD
I got over 2 years ago and it’s still my go to for when I know I’ll be photographed. I wear shade 118, hands down best match ever for me in any foundation. My only gripe about it is that it NEEDS a setting powder, u cannot get away w/o one. It’s no longer my HG now thought it’s my third fave, hahah!
Don’t worry about having too many foundations…I have 6 in rotation in fall/winter and 3 in rotation for spring/summer
Jan 04, 2012 @ 01:14:08
I’ve been using make up for ever 117 for over a year now, it’s a pretty decent match, I could go lighter in the winter. I love it but only if I wear a primer underneath otherwise it’s very hard to apply (ie clings to dry spots).

thats a pretty amazing foundation. i’ve heard a lot o great things about it recently (aka the last few days in posts i’ve read) tho i have to wait and see if it’ll be released here in NZ. It looks like the perfect foundation!

This looks really great on you, Michelle! I must remember to try this sometime this year.
I just bought a foundation myself — Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation — so I can’t possibly crack open another. Or can I?
Jan 04, 2012 @ 14:58:40
I really like this foundation. My shade is 120 in the winter and I use it everyday.
Jan 05, 2012 @ 20:49:36
i’ve used a lot of foundations in my life, but have yet to try this one. i’ve heard great things though, so maybe this is the boost i needed. i will certainly try the online shade matching bc my closest sephora is over an hour away-ugh- so this sounds like a dream!!
