Looking back…and ahead
At this time last year, I vowed I would not:
- make a resolution that involves a ban on makeup buying.
- just buy something because it is pretty.
- neglect what I already own in my collection.
- be afraid to let go of items that I barely use.
- be swayed by the fateful words “Limited Edition.”
Overall, I think I fared quite well this year. My makeup hoarding buying habits have improved, and I’ve made more of an effort to use what I have from my own collection. I’ve become a smarter shopper too and am not as swayed to buy based on how pretty it is. I am now asking myself ‘do I really need this?’ and ‘do I have anything that resembles this?’ If I say yes, I have learned to walk away…and be okay with it. And as for Limited Edition, I am no longer a slave to these two words. Allelujah! I came to a realization that it’s okay to go without the LE products…and that sometimes, even if something is Limited Edition it can make a reappearance (I’m looking at you MAC).
I have also learned to let go though this is still an area I need to continue to work on.
Why does this feel like a therapy session?
My resolutions for 2012 are a bit different — less about my buying habits. This year I’m focusing my energies on:
- making improvements to LipstickRules
- making my home more homey. Goal is to declutter, hang up photos and decorate the remaining rooms of the house (kids rooms, and master bedroom).
- going to the gym more
- saving more money
So there you have it. Do you make resolutions — and compare them to the year before? Let me know.
And finally, I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year! Thank you for all the support you’ve given me this year and look forward to connecting with you in 2012.

I’m feeling the same way about LE products and products in general. Everyone is talking about the new MAC Collections, and I’m not seeing anything that appeals. I’m pretty sure I already have something that’s similar-yes it’s gotten to that point. I have got so much stuff right now, that I will be going on a blush ban for sure. I want to use the pretty ones I have and not accumulate more clones!
I’m also getting serious about losing weight, and also want to declutter. And to work on Beauty Reflections too of course. Those are my goals for this year!
Happy New Year to you and your family Michelle! Big hugs to all!

Hi Tracy – I’m officially on a blush ban as well. I was sorting through my stuff and I have enough blush to beautify a 100 women. Crazy. Maybe you, me and Jane can work on keeping our resolutions together! Happy New Year to you too my friend

I probably have enough blush for 200 women lol!
Deal on keeping each other on track! I need someone to kick my butt!

Oh my goodness, I could have written the last three resolutions myself. I definitely need to do more to make my house a home. I have finally unpacked the last box (only 18 months after moving in) but I would love to put some of my beautifying efforts into the house as well as my face!! With the school reunion around the corner I’m feeling the get fit urge too
.
Thank you so much for this post Michelle. This may be my first year of properly setting myself a set of resolutions (and sticking to them). All the best for the New Year for you and the family xx

Hi Jane! I have lived in this house for four years and it still looks like we’re in transition…I was saying above that maybe, you me and Tracy can help keep each other on track this year
All the best to you and your family as well!

Great job at keeping your resolutions! I made a couple of the same, and feel relieved that I’m no longer a slave to LE! I wish you a happy new year Michelle

I’m paring down bigtime on stuff this year. Having been unemployed (very happily so) for nearly a year now, I am in a major period of learning to let go of consumerism and be happy with what I have. I won’t be buying anything unless it’s to replace something that wears out, or unless it’s something I *really* need (like, survival-type need — not another nude lipstick!) Happy 2012 to you and yours.

Thanks Kristin! I’m trying hard to do the same – hoping this year I’ll be better about being such a consumer. Happy New Year to you too!

I hear ya lady on the de-cluttering of the house and decorating rooms- I feel like every January of a new year I resolve to de-clutter and finish decorating. I guess it’s easy to accumulate a bunch of junk in a years span;-) That limited edition thing is hilarious- it is soooo captivating to see those words isn’t it?? Such a marketing ploy that actually works!
I resolve to be more bold and live life to the fullest this year because time with my kids goes by quicker than I would like it to, and I realize they won’t be little for long.
I wish you the best for 2012 and look forward to continue following you and Lipstick Rules!

Good for you JennySue – I believe you can do it! Wish you all the best!

I’m not bothering with resolutions as they are normally broken by the first week lol. I too have got over the whole LE thing and have bought a lot less makeup last year than the previous year but it’s still way too much. However, if I tell myself that I can’t have something then I want it more and it’s counter-productive. Everything in moderation lol. I hope you have a great 2012 xx

I believe in moderation as well
Happy New Year Jenny!
