Let's do the MAC Arena

Oh MAC Arena, where have you been all my life? I can't believe in all the years I've been a MAC maniac, I've never purchased this colour before.

Arena is one of those colours that is easy to miss. But while it might look uninspiring in the pan, on the lid it is a different story. Arena is a shimmery golden peach that has really great depth of colour. I use it mainly as a wash of colour or as a base to build other colours upon like Brun (another new love!), Mulch or Woodwinked blended into the crease.

Arena caught my attention after seeing a recent Pixiwoo tutorial on "Healthy Glowing Makeup." Sam used it and mentionned that it would also look gorgeous on Asian and darker skin tones. When either of the Pixiwoo sisters recommend something, I tend to listen so next time I was at MAC I had to take a look at this shadow. And I'm glad I did!
Arena swatched. It looks way better in person

Have you tried MAC Arena?

QOTD: Does a sales associates' makeup influence your purchase decision?

The other night I paid a visit to my local Chanel counter to swatch the new Rouge Coco lipsticks. While I hate to the use the word 'lemming,' that is what happened to me when I saw how gorgeous those lippies are. But that is another post, and for those wondering, for once I didn't haul right away. Ok. Next.

The sales associate who was at this counter at the time had the most awful makeup on in my opinion. Not very Chanel-esque at all. Way too much eyeliner, and super red lips that were outlined with a pencil that didn't match. I did my best to focus on my swatching but she kept hovering over me and started to suggest colours which were so not to my taste. In retrospect, I wonder if my purchase decision would have been different if the woman behind the counter had makeup on that I liked. Would I have walked away with a Rouge Coco?

In the same department store a few weeks before, I had a similar experience at the Lancome counter. There, I was asking about the 'Chris & Tell' lipstick, which the sales associate had no clue about. She kept insisting that this lipstick was not by Lancome and that I was 'probably thinking of a different brand.' Wrong lady. In any case, I was perusing their lipsticks anyway and again couldn't help but feel distracted by how 'loud' her makeup was. Again that day I walked away with nothing.

For both Lancome and Chanel, I kind of expect a certain look from their sales associates -- classic, elegant and sophisticated. I know that while many people are not fond of the makeup that MAC makeup artists have on sometimes, I think it is always appropriate for the brand.

Do you think how the sales associates wear their makeup should match the brand they represent? Does it influence your purchasing decision?

Thoughts on Covergirl & Olay's Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush

I am a fan of cream blushes. I love how they apply and love the final effect they have on your cheeks -- soft, natural glow. The only cream blushes I've tried are on the higher end (MAC, Illamasqua, NARS and Stila) so I was intrigued to try out Covergirl & Olay's Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush, which is available at local drugstores.

Here's how Covergirl & Olay describe the product: "Creamy colour defines cheekbones and stays suspended over fine lines and wrinkles for flatteringly flawless coverage. The Olay Regenerist Serum inside is infused with vitamins, skin conditioners and anti-oxidants that actually help improve skin texture to give you an instantly healthy-looking, youthful glow"

When you open the case, you see the colour that includes a white swirl. Reminds me a bit of a lollipop.  I tried this in the #220 Royal Plum (swatch below), which is a pretty plummy brown colour. Here are some thoughts:

Pros:
  • This does feel very smooth when you apply to your cheeks. I used my fingers to blend but I did think it is a convenient feature to have the sponge included.
  • It had decent staying power throughout the day and didn't feel heavy
  • It blended seamlessly and didn't settle into any fine lines
  • There was no cakiness or change of colour throughout the day

 Cons:
  • This colour wasn't particularly super pigmented and I felt I did need to layer on to get good pigmentation. Even then, the results are very subtle. .
  • Not that it affected application but the white swirl seemed to separate from the main colour in the pan after a few weeks
  • Royal Plum while pretty didn't seem overly unique to me

Overall, I thought the product was okay. Royal Plum is pretty and neutral which is normally right up my alley but it didn't excite me when I applied on my cheeks. I do think though that if you're scared of blush and/or want to try out a cream one, this is worth trying out as it does give a nice subtle finish. It is also a more affordable option at $12.99 Canadian.

Have you tried this blush? What are your thoughts on cream blush?

Loving...Lise Watier's Vintage Moderne Collection

Who's done with winter? Me! Me! I'm ready for spring and seeing the latest collection from Lise Watier has me in a 'springy' mood. Lise Watier is a Canadian brand that I've posted about before -- and I think one of our best kept secrets. The products are beautiful and high-quality with a similar price point as MAC. It was a brand that I once thought was for 'older' ladies but have since discovered that the brand has so much to offer.

Lise Watier's Spring Collection is called Vintage Moderne, taking inspiration from the 1950s. Here's info from their marketing materials: "Hayworth, Lake, Deneuve and other legendary beauties inspired a contemporary vision of glamour, grace and feminity." The Vintage Moderne face is 'natural, with an emphasis on the eyes, and a bright well-defined mouth. It's a polished timely look that of the modern femme fatale."

Sounds good eh? In person, these products are beautiful. I will do additional reviews in the coming days as I'm so excited by the products.

First up is...the lipstick! Surprised? This is the Vintage Moderne Lip Duo (Limited Edition, $18), a dual-shade lipstick offering lipstick junkies like me, so many different looks. One on side is a pink with a violet undertone and the other is a orange-hued coral. I didn't even notice this at first but when I did, I was to put it mildly, excited. The colours are opaque when applied. The pink is on the cooler side. The coral is so lovely -- my favorite side by far. The lipstick is moisturizing and feels luxurious on the lip, creamy and not drying. As a bonus, it also had good staying power lasting 4-5 hours on me with no reapplication.

Lip Duo Vintage Moderne Lipstick - how cool is this? Two different colours in one lipstick!

This duo lippie is very similar to the other product I bought last summer from Lise Watier, which has gold on one end and silver on the other. Very innovative, n'est pas?

MAC's Boldly Bare lipliner a.k.a the "AAAAAAAAAH!" lipliner

Ladies, here is a look at one of MAC's new lipliners called Boldly Bare. This is the pencil that made many a Toronto beauty blogger, gasp, "oooh"(or in my case, a giddy shriek resembling 'aaaaaaaaaaah') and more importantly, haul haul haul, this past weekend. The pencil, which is being released as part of MAC's upcoming Too Fabulous collection, was already on display and available at the MAC Pro store. It launches at counters next week, and includes a number of Mineralize blushes, more LE lip pencils and the return of Cremesheen Glasses!

This collection also includes the new lipliner called Naked which apparently is a match for Myth lipstick that I know many of you love. While I think Myth looks fab on many, it is too pale for me and gives me that concealer lip look that is so not flattering. But Boldly Bare, this is my type of pencil. It is a gorgeous nude-pink liner that I think is going to be universally flattering. I'm thinking of a back-up or two of this one!

Boldly Bare (on its own on my pigmented lips. this will look different on you depending on the pigmentation of your lips)

Boldly Bare with a bit of Bourjois Effet 3D lipgloss in Rose Emblematic (#4), which was sent to me by the lovely Liparazzi

The 'little black dress' of makeup: black eye liners (Review of Noir Cosmetics)

Black eyeliners is to makeup what a little black dress means for fashion -- something that is a classic and is always appropriate. This is the concept behind a new makeup line from Canada appropriately called, Noir Cosmetics.

Montreal, Quebec-based Noir is "a makeup collection founded on a singular beauty principle: perfectly lined eyes in classic black will forever define sophistication." Noir is the brainchild of Montrealer Caroline Cohen, a former marketing expert who "was spurred into creative action when her own search for the perfect black eye liner in a high-end American department store three years ago proved fruitless. Upon returning to Montreal she joined forces with her family of long-time beauty professionals to develop the concentrated offering of 12 skus, which recently debuted in Jean Coutu stores across the province."

I've been testing out Noir products over the past week and I have to say I've become a fan. I'm always on the look-out for long-lasting, pigmented and creamy liners. And in my view, you can never have too many black liners. Among my current favorites are Annabelle's Ohmygoth smudgeliner, MAC's Graphblack and Phone Number. I've now added Noir.

Here is a closer look at Noir's current products (swatched from left to right):

-Ultra Rich Black Eye Pencil ($16 Canadian) in Rich Black: This can used as a base to create smokey eye or use it on its own for an easy smoked out look. It is very pigmented and smooth. Reminds me of MAC's Greasepaint Stick. I will do a side by side comparison and let you know how it goes.
-Smooth Blend Eyeliner ($16 Canadian): The powdery consistency of this kohl eyeliner, combined with its soft texture, won't tug at skin during application. Includes a sponge blending tip. I smudged it in the swatch to illustrate. I'm a fan of this liner though I do think that Annabelle's Ohmygoth is very similar in quality and at a lower price point.
-Kohl Eyeliner in Black Mania ($14): Very intense black that applies like butter. Instant glam with this liner.
-Forever Noir Long Wear Eyeliner ($14): This is the line's waterproof, smudgeproof and tug-proof liner. It has Vitamin E and jojoba oil to help with a smooth application. This is lovely and I used it on my waterline with much success. My second favorite of the line (favorite is coming up later)
-Retractable Waterproof Liner in Jet ($15): Rich and creamy designed to last without smudging. This is good for precision lining. I used it to trace a line on my lids for a more precise application with the liquid liner.
-Lifeline Liquid Liner in True Black ($16): This is a perfect matte black shade. Dries in seconds. This is water-resistant too which is a bonus. I am usually not good with liquid liners but this was easy to apply. It really stays put and doesn't smudge once dry.
-Glimmer Liquid Liner in Starry Night ($16): By far my favorite from the collection. I didn't think I was into liners with a bit of glimmer but this one won me over. This liner has a very subtle hint of 'sexy silver sequins.' It's hard to see in the swatch but it is lovely. I wore this to the Toronto blogger meet-up and it lasted all day and into the evening.
-Gel Liner in Royal Black ($16): Ok, I haven't tried this one out yet but I did swatch it and it glided on effortlessly. I am testing it out this week and will let you know how it goes. I love gel liners and so I'm curious to see how this compares to BB gel liners and MAC Fluidlines.

The Noir line-up also includes the Lush Last Mascara ($16) and an eyeshadow palette called Jewel Box Eye Shadow Trio in Ivory Pearl, Silver Quartz and Diamond Black ($28).

I haven't tried these yet but am planning to do a FOTD in the near future as I'm really like the texture of the shadows and the look of the mascara. Here are the swatches of the shadows, which I think will be great for a smokey look. Ivory Pearl is like a champagne colour, Silver is a grey with shimmer and Diamond Black is a super-pigmented black with a hint of shimmer (this is the most intriguing colour of the three on first swatch):

Overall, I've been pleased with the Noir eye pencils I've tested out so far. They are long-lasting, pigmented and smooth to apply. It took make-up remover to remove the swatches on my arm for instance.

I'm really loving the fact that Canada continues to produce such cool new makeup brands. I am curious to see how Noir plans to expand its product line considering that its premise is all about the black eyeliner. I'll be keeping my eye on this up and coming Canadian brand.

Noir Cosmetics is available in Quebec, and online via its web site (currently only shipping to Canada and the US). There are plans for international expansion so stay tuned ladies!

Is black liner a staple for you? What is your favorite?

Toronto Beauty Bloggers Meet-up - Part 1

After much anticipation, the very first ever Toronto Beauty Bloggers Meet-up took place this past Sunday. Twenty-five of us, bloggers and some company reps, attended the event which was held at Milestone's restaurant in downtown Toronto. The ever-beautiful Farah was the organizer extraordinaire who not only got us all together and organized the logistics -- she also pulled together amazing swag bags for the blog attendees.Companies including CoverFX, Marcelle/Annabelle, FaceAtelier, Cargo and many more donated goodies for all the girls attending and also provided gift baskets that were raffled off. No one left empty handed!

Some familiar faces were there including of course, Farah, Jenn, Naomi, and Lelo. I was thrilled to finally meet Nadia, Anjali, Nancy, Isabel, Karyn, Sarah and so many others! I wish we all had more time to talk. Everyone I met was so super-sweet and friendly. We were all grinning throughout the event and at the end. And of course, no makeup event could end without a shopping trip.

After noshing on some yummy brunch items, we ended at the MAC Pro Store on Queen St. where many of us holding our pink goodie bags marched in and did some hauling.

I think I've found some great new friends. I look forward to seeing you all again soon!

Me with the gorgeous Farah who deserves an award for organizing this amazing event!

Ms. Naz (green top) drove all the way from Montreal to come!

Blogging: How do you strike a balance?

Happy Monday everyone! I've been M.I.A. all weekend but I do have lots to update you on this week including a recap of the Toronto Beauty Bloggers Meet-up and a few reviews. For today though, I am going to ramble. Ready?

One question that comes up alot when people talk about blogging is how much time is devoted to doing it. People have asked me on several occasions how I juggle this blog with having a family, being a wife, and working full-time. My answer is, I find a way because I love it. It may mean some late nights scheduling posts and a chunk of time on the weekend doing a mass photo shoot of all the products I want to review. As for FOTDs, these are usually done in the wee hours of the morning when I get ready for work.

Blogging for me is a labour of love. I do it for me and for you my readers. I devote time to developing posts, responding to emails and on top of that reading and commenting on the hundreds of blogs I follow. And don't even get me started on Twitter (btw, I'm so mighty peeved that someone hacked into my account this weekend and sent rude DMs to many of my followers! aack.)

My challenge though is that while I do love blogging, it can be all-consuming so I often have to force myself to do other things in my free time versus always checking the dashboard for new posts or writing and posting myself. It is hard because really if I could I would probably be happy doing this full-time. But I do have my 'real' life and I do have to make sure I find a way to balance it all. So if you've noticed, I don't post three posts a day any longer and sometimes I don't post at all for a couple of days. On these days, though I do have to admit I get antsy and want to check the blog...and a lot of the time, I do take a peek.So I don't know if I've really found a balance yet. I'm trying though.

How do you strike a balance?

Make it work? Or Back to the store?

Do you ever buy a makeup product and then get home and realize it isn't exactly what you expected.  It could be a lipstick colour or eyeshadow that seemed great under the lights at Sephora but at home it just wasn't the same. Or it could be a foundation that seemed the right colour at the store but after a few uses, you realize the colour is somehow off. Do you keep the product or take it back?

For me, it depends. If I can figure out a way to make it work, I'll keep it. If it's definitely not working, it's back to the store -- if I have the receipt. Take for example, MAC's Sandy B. Loved it's frosty peachy pink goodness in the store. At home, I looked a bit freaky. Determined to try and make it work, I added gloss on top which made it even worse, and then tried pairing it with different lip pencils. Yucky. Way too frosty and the wrong colour for me. Too bad because it is such a gorgeous colour. So back to the store Sandy B!

Does this ever happen to you?

Happy Friday to everyone. I'm very excited -- finally getting my hair trimmed tomorrow and then I'm meeting up with my fellow  Toronto beauty bloggers for brunch on Sunday! Stay tuned for the posts! What are you up to this weekend?

Limbo time: NARS Botan Brush

Each time I do my makeup I see products or tools I know I should use but somehow never reach for. These products are, in a way, in Makeup Limbo.

It is the place where things that once 'rocked my world' seem to hang in limbo waiting to be shown some love. Take for example, NARS' Botan Brush, a lovely specimen, don't you think? It is meant to be used to buff, and polish face powders. Mr. Botan, as I like to call it, is of excellent quality with dense bristles. This brush feels amazing on the face, super soft. It is a very big brush. No joke. MAC kabuki brushes are mini compared to this brush.
Mr. Botan brush entered my life after a NARS event early 2009 when the makeup artist used it on my face, showed me the results and then said, 'and it's selling out all the time because Oprah loves it.' I am not one to buy a product because of Oprah at all but for some reason that day, I fell for it. It is expensive and I remember major buyer's remorse for weeks after I bought it. I religiously used it every day to gently buff my powder in. After all, I wanted to get my money's worth.

Today, Mr. Botan brush sits in my collection collecting dust. I'm not sure why I don't reach for it very often as it is hard to miss. I better start using him again or he might end up in my makeup graveyard. I don't think Oprah would approve.

Do you have anything in your collection that sits in limbo?

I am a Beauty Blogger...Hear me Roar!

There was a heated debate going on today on Twitter and on various blogs. The debate focused on a post from a beauty site that questioned beauty bloggers as new media and whether we are trustworthy. Here's my two cents:

In case you didn't know, I'm Michelle and I'm a proud beauty blogger. I will not apologize for being self-indulgent and focusing on products that work for me. I will not apologize for not being a makeup artist by trade. I will not apologize for writing long posts that ramble on. I will not apologize for posting about products (new and old) that get me excited.

These are some of the reasons why I blog in the first place. Blogging is a creative outlet for me -- I see it as my little space in the online world. It is a hobby that I love and I've been very fortunate to have found a readership who has been so supportive, encouraging and inspiring.

The post questionned the validity of those of us who blog but aren't makeup artists by trade. How can we review a product fairly if we've only tested it on ourselves, stated the author. The author also went on to say  that those of us who have day jobs outside of the beauty industry should not be doing what we do. So then, can't the same be said that you shouldn't write a blog if you aren't a journalist or writer by trade? What qualifies a person then to write a beauty blog?

I started blogging because it combined my passion for makeup and my love of writing. Ask many of my friends and they can attest that I have loved makeup for many many years. I am the girl who many said had a 'mini MAC counter' in my room when I was 19.

No, I'm not a makeup artist by trade nor have I ever claimed to be. But I don't think that makes me any less qualified to write a beauty blog. Journalists writing for beauty magazines or any type of magazine/newspaper are often not professionally trained in the beats they happen to write about. In a previous life, I was a journalist and I wrote about technology. And by no means did I have a technology credentials nor was I a techie.

There is room for all voices in the beauty blogging community, regardless of what you do in your 'real life.' That is what is so cool about blogging -- we are representative of many nationalities, ages, and lifestyles. With this comes many unique points of view. I follow hundreds of blogs and each day I continue to discover news ones with fresh perspectives.

Shame on those who try to silence those of us who have an opinion or try to pigeon hole us into one category. Clearly their view of this amazing community is narrow. They are missing the point.

Beauty bloggers, we are making an impact -- and that's why we are getting this type of attention, negative and positive. Let's keep it all in perspective and not lose sight of why we do what we do.

Say it together, " I'm a beauty blogger and proud of it!"

This is a bit of a rant and ramble. Let me know if you read the post in question and what you think! Check out Lipglossiping' s, London Beauty Review, and Helen and Sheenie's posts on the issue as well.

It's all Routine

I have a routine when it comes to putting on my makeup. It's almost automatic in terms of how I do it. First, I moisturize and then apply my foundation. I then work my way down my face starting from my eyes. The 'finale' is the lipstick and gloss.

I don't usually stray from this routine at all. I only got to thinking about it because yesterday, I applied blush before my eye makeup. I felt out of sorts when I did that and didn't feel the groove afterwards. Never mess with a good routine right?

And in terms of deciding on a look, I tend to choose my colours for the day ahead of time. I base it on what I think I'll be wearing -- and I grab all the products I need before getting started. There was a time when I would just start picking out products randomly and seeing what I come up with. Some days I do that still but with limited time in the morning, I've become a plan-ahead person. Boring? Maybe. But it's working for me so I think I'll stick to it.

How about you? Do you have a routine when it comes to makeup application? Do you plan out your looks ahead of time or go with the flow?

That's my Monday rambling. How was your weekend? I had a fantastic time -- Valentine's dinner with the Husband on Friday night, and hung out with the family the rest of the long weekend including visits to the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls, and then the Royal Ontario Museum.

QOTD: Do you buy back-ups?

I'm loving my new Viva Glam Cyndi lipstick. Loving. A part of me wants to buy a back-up. I had heard that these Viva Glams will only be around for a year until the next Viva Glam comes out. My rational self tells me that there will likely be a colour that is close to it if not exact. But my makeup junkie self thinks, what if I don't? I need this lipstick in my life. Forever. Ok, maybe that is exaggerating.

I've never bought a back-up of anything but I know some of you have. What makes a product back-up worthy for you? Do you believe in back-ups? Yay or Nay? Let me know what you think!

Hope you are having a great weekend. We have a long weekend in Ontario -- Family Day on Monday!

MAC Lipstick Swatches: Viva Glam Cyndi, Viva Glam Gaga and Fresh Salmon (Swatches)

The much-anticipated new Viva Glams and Spring Forecast Collection from MAC arrived in stores this week. Here are a few swatches and initial thoughts about three lipsticks: Viva Glam Gaga; Viva Glam Cyndi; and Fresh Salmon (Spring Forecast).

Viva Glam Gaga
Viva Glam Gaga is a pretty bubblegum pink. This lustre-finish lipstick is perfect for spring. Very fresh. I wanted to show the full colour so I applied heavily in the photo above. On my skintone (NC35), it wasn't super flattering. I find that though with blue-based pinks, which aren't the best pinks for my skintone. That said, applied lightly, I love the sheer pink colour this lipstick gives on my pigmented lips. I think paired with the right eye makeup, I can make this colour work. And work well. It is worth having if you are a fan of bubblegum pink colours.

Viva Glam Cyndi
I love coral and I love red. So when I saw this lustre-lipstick in person, I knew it had to be mine.  And when I finally applied when I got home, it was instant love. The swatch above is after one swipe. The colour is gorgeous with a capital G. It is the best of the coral and red world combined. It isn't super bright and totally day-appropriate if you're looking to try a brighter lip. For those who are used to brighter lips (me!), this is a colour that you could build up quite nicely. I can't wait to try out different glosses with this to create different looks. Viva Glam Cyndi is again, a perfect colour for spring!

Viva Glam Cyndi & Gaga (mixed together)

When I was humming and hawing over whether to get Viva Glam Gaga, the makeup artist suggested mixing the two Viva Glams together. And by golly, she was right. Gaga and Cyndi together creates a beautiful deep pink colour! Love love love! Give it a try and you'll see what I mean.

 Fresh Salmon

Ever since Belle du Jour swatched this on her site, I was intrigued. I love corals as I mentioned and when I saw this I had to have it as I don't have anything quite like it in my collection. Fresh Salmon is a bit frosty. I find I have to do a few swipes to get a good colour payoff. But I love the results. The colour is this gorgeous peach colour that really brightens my face. Excuse the poor application in the photo above. This is what happens when I try to do late night swatching. Dedicated makeup junkie eh? I'll do another swatch during the day as I don't think the lighting tonight shows the true gorgeousness of this colour. Again another hit for spring by MAC.

That's it for now. Anyone else pick up any Viva Glams?  Thoughts?

Lotions, Potions & Body Washes: What I Use to Battle Dry, Winter Skin

Dry skin is something I battle each year as soon as winter hits. But this year, I said good-bye to dry, itchy skin thanks to some changes to my routines and the use of some products. First up is hand cream, which until recently, I never used. Not sure why. It just wasn't a priority for me. Now? Call me a hand cream convert, I am loving the following products:

Elizabeth Grant Caviar Hand Cream ($50)
Who doesn't like a little caviar in their hand cream? This is an ultra-luxurious, non-greasy cream that is working well to keep my hands supple during the driest conditions. I like that it doesn't have a scent and doesn't feel heavy on your hands after application. I love how silky smooth my hands feel after apply this cream. According to Elizabeth Grant, the product contains Torricelumn™ and Shea Butter to moisturize; Caviar Extract to rejuvenate; and Wheat Protein to moisturize, strengthen and build elasticity. I use this product sparingly as it is a luxury product priced at $50.

Olay Quench Therapy Hand Cream
Once you apply this cream, you feel like your hands are instantly moisturized. According to Olay, this hand cream is packed with vitamins (B5, B3, and E) which helps severely dry skin. This doesn't feel greasy and a litte goes a long way. It's helped reduce the cracked skin on my knuckles (eew), which used to plague me every winter. The negative? It does have a scent which I can't say I like at all. And while your hands feel moisturized, it doesn't give it that smooth feeling. It is however affordably priced at about $10 Canadian.

Next up is Face. I continue to wash with Cetaphil which is the only thing lately that doesn't dry out my skin or irritate it. I do have to wipe off my eye makeup with my beloved Lancome Bi-Facils and makeup with makeup wipes first and then wash with Cetaphil. After washing my face, it's time to moisturize with:

Elizabeth Grant Biocollasis Serums
A few posts ago, I declared my love for Elizabeth Grant's Biocollasis Serums (day, night, and eye). I use the eye serum both morning and night and it has significantly reduced the dry patches around my eyes that appeared as soon as winter hit. All three serums have done wonders for my skin. Seriously. Love these serums. One pump of the product and you are able to cover your entire face. Your face feels as smooth as a baby's bum. I will be repurchasing once I run out.

Skin MD
As a moisturizer, lately I've been using, surprise surprise, Skin MD. We've all seen the almost-daily reviews/contests about this product so I won't go into much detail as I'm sure you've read enough. My two cents: I do think it helps restore moisture to my face; it didn't break me out; and I think it complements the other products I'm currently using namely the Elizabeth Grant serums. That's all I will say.

Moving on...Let's talk about Body Washes. I think what you use on your skin in the shower/bath can also contribute to dry skin. I am a shower girl so I love shower gels, body washes you name it.

Soap & Glory Creamy Clarifying Shower Gel
My current favorite is Soap & Glory's Clean on Me shower gel. Featuring hints of Mandarin peel, this has a lovely very feminine scent. With a built-in lotion (how cool!), my skin does feel smoother/moisturized after I've used this. In Canada, these are available at Shopper's, where I paid about $10 for it. It is my second bottle and I think it is one I will keep repurchasing.

Olay Botanical Fusion Body Wash
Next is Olay Botanical Fusion Body Wash. This is a super-nice body wash that leaves your skin super soft. The scent is really pleasant and not overwhelming. I could slather on this stuff like there's no tomorrow. I love how it lathers up and how hydrated my skin feels after I've used it. This is priced at $8.99 and available at local drugstores/retail stores.

Origins Ginger Souffle Whipped Body Cream
Finally, body lotion. My tried and true and ultimate favorite is Origins Ginger Souffle Whipped Body Cream. I love the name of it. Doesn't it sound like it's good enough to eat?! Well it smells good enough to eat. I use this after a shower and while the scent may seem strong, it doesn't interfere with any other scents you might choose to put on after. It is a big tub and has lasted me for a few months. It is priced at about $35 and available at select Bay stores in Canada.

How about you ladies? What are your favorite lotions, potions and body washes?

Disclaimer: Olay, Elizabeth Grant, Skin MD were sent to Lipstick Rules for consideration.

Iluminate me: Estee Lauder's Ideal Light (review)

As you know, I am on a mission to find products that conceal, cover and brighten. On to 'brighten.' Today, I wanted to chat about Estee Lauder's Ideal Light, a brush-on illuminator that I purchased before Christmas.

I have the colour #03 Medium. This product does help to brighten my eye area and conceals darker areas near my nose. I like how light-weight it feels and it doesn't sink into any lines. It does not look cakey at all once applied.

That said, this isn't a good concealer for spots/blemishes as it is light in texture and doesn't give full coverage for that purpose. And the brush? It's handy...in theory...You have to twist the bottom of the tube to get product into the brush and I find there is often too much product deposited when I do this. I tend to brush on the product on my hand and then use my fingers to blend around my eyes and/or nose.

Overall though, I give this a thumb's up and if I ever finish it, I will likely repurchase.
Based on reviews I've seen, this product seems similar in concept to YSL Touche Eclat and Bobbi Brown's new product, both of which I'm intriguted to try. Priced at around $30 Canadian, Ideal Light is on the high end, and is available at department stores and online.

Have you tried any products like this? Yay or Nay?

Drugstore lippie love: Rimmel's Airy Fairy and Maybelline's Blushing Brunette

Call me a lipstick snob but I admit I gravitate to higher end/department store lipsticks. But recently, I have found some real gems at the drugstore from Rimmel and Maybelline.

From Rimmel, there's the infamous Airy Fairy, a pretty light pink. I love the pigmentation of this lipstick and its smooth application. I hate the bubblegum smell though. Rimmel, if you are reading, please remove the scent from your lipsticks. Not needed for a scent with such a lovely product.

Airy Fairy (excuse the darkness of the photo; this is a very light pink IRL)

Next is Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Blushing Brunette. I adore these lipsticks from Maybelline and want to add more to my collection. The colour selection is fantastic and so is the price which is under $10 Canadian. They are pigmented and smooth to apply. I would say they are a bit dry on the lips so I do tend to add gloss on top. This colour is one of three that I own and it's by far my favorite. I just slap on this puppy and I'm good to go on those days where I don't wear much makeup. When I wear this it adds instant brightness to my face.

Blushing Brunette

How about you? How do you feel about drugstore lippies? Yay or Nay? And which ones are you favorites?

NOTE: In case any of you are wondering, I'm still doing my 50 day lipstick challenge. I have failed at taking photos every day. Sigh. Such is life. It's been great rediscovering old favorites and coming to realize I have a few duds as well. Will do a round-up...someday!
