QOTD: What’s your take on makeovers? Yay or Nay?
I’ve had many a makeover in my life and ever since I’ve been blogging I’ve done many more. I call it ‘research’ for the blog.
For the most part I have had very positive experiences, especially at NARS and YSL, where I feel the makeup has been beautiful but still ‘me’.
On the other hand, MAC has been hit or miss. Sometimes I like the ‘after’ but other times, I feel the look is too much for what I would wear in real life.
Sometimes, it’s just plain bad like an experience I had at Benefit, when it had a counter at the Bay (Bloor). I had a makeover by someone who clearly didn’t know what they were doing (i.e. one dark eyeshadow colour that went all the way up to my eyebrows and not blended — you can bet that I wiped it all off right after) and clearly visible foundation lines on my jawline. Luckily that counter is no longer there and I’ve had much better experiences with Benefit at Sephora and at Holt’s.
UPDATE: A good experience in my books is one where the makeup is done well — and the sell afterwards (you know it’s part of the course) is soft. It’s those situations where I’m more apt to buy versus very pushy tactics or tactics where they point out your faults.
So I wanted to ask you, do you get makeovers done at counters? Good or bad experiences? Look forward to your answers.

I once got one at MAC, but the lighting there was so bright, the results ended up being too dramatic for the "everyday look" I asked for.

I've gotten a few makeovers at mall and Sephora counters.
My absolute favorite was Dior: The sales rep helped fix my eyebrows (one of them was a little crooked), picked out a perfect shade of lipgloss for my lips and taught me to put on eyeliner without being so shaky. I ended up buying the Airflash spray-on foundation, Diorshow mascara and some lip gloss. Best experience ever.
I've had some bad experience at MAC — the lady painted me up like a clown even though I told her too many bright colors was not my preference. I still like their makeup line a lot but I think a couple of their makeup people are a little too aggressive with their techniques.

I had only once in my entire life! It was at the Paul & Joe counter and so far, it was good! Not fantabulous but they did a great job! I do have some preference on makeup though, I like the light version and it was done a bit too heavy for my taste

Hmmm, I don't really love makeovers, apart from 2 people at my local MAC store. I'm kinda shy and for some reason I feel like I am being judged while being made over, so if I think something is too strong or not good, I feel bad about it. So I hardly ever do them, unless the "good" people at the MAC store are available.

I've had motsly good experiences, particularly with mac. I don't get them done much anymore but I do still seek advise from MUAs as I like to get another persoin's opinion.

One counter I like to go to is the Laura Mercier counter at Holt Renfrew (Yorkdale). I find that they're pretty good at applying makeup. It's nice to have my makeup done by someone else once in a while. I love being pampered!

Makeovers at counters are not such a good idea where I live, because there's always the tremendous hard-sell for a purchase afterward. And I really hate having to shop under duress. ;D

I don't get too many makeovers because most of them turned out bad – I think I do a better job than them! So I gave them excuse that they don't know how to apply makeups on Asians.
Most makeover experiences were quite pleasant. They weren't pushy and I often go back to purchase a few items after a while. However in one particular makeover at Clinque counter, the sales was extremely pushy, not to mention that the makeover was just so plain. That made me stayed away from Clinuqe for a while.
The best makeover I had was at Laura Mercier counter about 2 years ago. It was dramatic but dramatically good! With 10+ years of makeup experiences it was then I learn how to use eyeliners properly!

T.T I can relate to the one eyeshadow up to eyebrow thing! Mine was brown, and I still haven't gotten over it.
I agree that MAC makeovers are a hit and miss, mine have mostly been misses.
On ur word, I am gonna give YSL and NARS a try, I'm gonna blame you if they put brown eyeshadow up to my eyebrow k? xD

It's hit or miss for me as well at the MAC counter; it totally depends on who's in that day. I've has a really bad experience at the Estee Lauder counter as well. I'm just glad that none of these bad experiences have kept me from having makeovers done. There's something very relaxing about it.

Best makeover ever was at Laura Mercier – no hard sell, lovely lovely girl, gave me a fabulous 'me but better' look.
Worst ever – Smashbox. Vegas-showgirl-tastic. Mr London actually physically jumped when I went to get him from the book department in Selfridges.

I forgot to say – I *loved* the makeover you had that this picture came from – the Indian Summer NARS makeover, right? This picture tipped me over into buying that duo, and I adore it. x

OMGoodness..the same thing hapened to me at the Benefit counter! I was actually on my way to the MAC counter-which was really crowded and the Benefit counter had no one…so when she asked if she could do a make-over on me, I caved, because I felt sorry for her. BIG MISTAKE. First off-I am African-American, and if you've seen Benefits color range-you know it's not for women of color..hahaha When she was done I LOOKED about 3-shades lighter and chalky, eyeshadow that extended waaaay past my eyes and up to my brow bone and as a highlight color…not a nude or cream color, but pink..who highlights the brow bone with pink??? Needless to say, I never went back….LOL.

i have never had a complete make over kind of thing..but in bit and pieces…sometyms a blush was tried and sometyms eyes were done…
its ok, though i would enjoy it more, if I were a more patient person by nature…

I've had some great makeovers at Mecca here, which stocks stila, nars, ellis faas (all the good stuff!). a stila makeover years ago was actually my frst foray into bold lip colours, I'm so grateful for that makeover! I've never had a makeover at MAC, probably because I hate paying retail here :S

I went to MAC for my grad, and they overdid my cheeks I looked like a glitter bomb. Also she messed up my eyes soooo bad, it looked like a 5 year old did it. I was really upset. I've had makeup done not necessarily a "makeover" at guerlain and dior but I loved their light touch and overall look that they create.

I've had a few. I was really pleased with one I had at MAC, a gorgeous natural smoky eye look and glowing skin. Another time at MAC, I felt like I was a clown walking around with all of that goopy foundation on my face-it was so gross.
I also had a good experience at Laura Mercier–they used perfect colors to complement my eyes and skin tone.

I've actually only had one makeover before, it as at Ulta for a Beauty Event and the two SAs that did my face (I won't call them MAs 'cause … they weren't lol) were kinda awful. The skin consultant lady was nice but REALLY pushy and the girl who did my makeup was clearly incompetent. I asked for Urban Decay brights. I ended up with oxidized foundation and bright teal eyeshadow in completely unblended different geometric shapes on both eyes. In the end I just bought the liner in Stash and went home to take it off directly.
I would love to get a makeover at MAC by my fav MA before I move away from where I am now though. She's awesome.

Mac makeovers I never like..I did it for my b-day..and I cried after
I also really hate the makeovers at faces…

I have never had a makeover done at any cosmetic counters, though I am curious and may look into having one in the future. I have had a makeup application at Donato salon at Yorkdale and it wasn't good! The foundation looked orange on me, and my eyes weren't even!
