How did you find me?

Our community is growing by the minute it seems and so it got me thinking to how on earth we all managed to find each other in blog land. Here's how I found and continue to find my favorite reads:

  • YouTube. Here is where I feel I discovered I wasn't alone in my beauty madness. Some of my favorite gurus had blogs like Makeup by RenRen, PixiWoo and of course  Lollipop26, and so I had to check these out.
  • Google search for makeup blogs. I found blogs and sites like Temptalia, Makeupandbeauty Blog, Musings of a Muse, Makeup Alley, Spectra and Nessasary Makeup this way. Simple but easy.
  • Google searches on specific product reviews I'm interested in. I come across new blog names this way and have found some new great reads.
  • Google Friend Connect. While checking out other sites, if someone makes a comment that I think is interesting I will click on that person's profile to see if they have a blog as well. If they do, I check it out and more often than not, I follow!
  • Google Friend Connect - my readers. In the beginning, I would follow everyone who followed me. I still try to do this but it's getting hard to keep up. I'm so thankful to all of you who are readers and I do try to check out all your blogs if you have one. It's sometimes hard to do now due to volume. Being honest here. I do make it a practice to check out my reader's profiles at least once a month so I can find out not just who has a blog but who my readers are and where they are from. .
  • Tags/Awards/Share the Love posts. I love when bloggers highlight new reads, favorites or tag and award other bloggers. It's a great way to find new sites and great reads!
  • Followers on other blogs or on my blog who add their URL within the body of their comments. Or, followers who invite me to come and check out their site. This one is slightly controversial it seems. I've seen other bloggers complain about this practice; their argument is people who do this are being 'greedy' and trying to get as many followers as possible. My thoughts are if you are in it for the right reasons (you love to read and write about makeup) then there is nothing wrong with this. I actually think it's great. It makes it really easy to find new blogs and I love that. I found MANY of my favorite bloggers this way such as Belle du Jour and Vexinthecity who were early commenters on my blog. How else would I have found them? So girls who do this including me, keep 'em coming.
What do you think?

Thanks for this post, Michelle! I have to admit I've been relying too much on Google searches and didn't realize all these other avenues - I've especially been meaning to check out more of the video bloggers on YouTube.

Oh - and as for how I found you, well you found me first... I assume from Janine's blog! :-)

I found you through looking through another blogger's links. While I don't like people to post inane links on my blog (I prefer them to email me their blog link if they want me to see it, because I really do go check them out), I don't mind the occasional link if it's relevant :)

I find the blogs I read in similar ways - searching for a product review, or through comments on my blog/blogs I read.

The thing I like the most about blogging is that it is a dialogue - you get to exchange ideas and views, both through comments and reading what other people think on their blogs.

I always wonder this myself!
I found you through Sara, The Makeup Snob! :) She was one of my very first readers/followers and I clicked on her blog and was surprised to learn that I had seen her on Specktra before. I fell into the blogging community from YouTube as well. Pursebuzz was my first find on YouTube and ever since, it has been down hill from there. LOL

I think I came across your blog through someone else's blogroll though I don't remember whose at the moment. Love Google Friend Connect though - one of the main reasons I started my blog on Blogger was because how incredibly easy the networking was.

I use google to find swatches and nice blogs :) And I always try to check the blogs of my readers and commenters.

That's a great summary of intricacies of finding who and what in the blogging world, Michelle.

I remember our first contact was when you dropped by my blog one day (I still don't know how you found me) and left a lovely comment on my NKOTB/makeup jargon post.

You then invited me to check out your blog too, which I did and followed! So, that would have been the final method mentioned on your list! :)

I found your wonerful blog when you left really sweet comments on mine! I have no idea how you found me though as I was quite new to blogging at the time. I mentioned you on my blog only yesterday so hopefully some other people will find you now too!

Great idea for a post; be interesting to see the comments. I have found all of the blogs I follow via blogrolls. I have never searched for them on Google; I find that linking from one blog to another keeps me occupied for hours on end. Also through the Handpicked Media network and Bloglovin.

It's lovely to be able to connect through different means of media. I hit a rock once though, when someone I tagged thought blog awards don't make sense, and neither do blog giveaways. I'm now afraid I bother a blogger when I tag her.

It's always a controversy how someone attracts readers.

@Michelle: Thank you! I did find you through Janine's blog and I found her via a mutual friend.

@Phyrra: I do like if people leave me a comment about the actual post and then include their link or invitation to their blog. It wouldn't be cool if they just commented and said nothing but 'come and visit my blog'.

@Grace: I agree completely. Who knew there would be so much to talk about when it comes to beauty?

@Crystal @Nea @Catherine @witoxicity - I think I found each of you via Google friend Connect and through your comments on other blogs!I'm glad we found each other!!

@LoveAudrey - your blog is amazing and I felt we had a lot in common :-)

@Halifax - I don't think you should worry about bugging a blogger with tags and such. I am always thrilled to get them and I think the majority of us appreciate them. To be honest though I'm unorganized and have often forgotten who tags/awarded me and forget to do it. I've started a notebook of post ideas to keep track of these better.

You actually found me first :) you made a comment on my blog and then I went to see your blog.

Keep up the good work. I'm glad there are some great Canadian bloggers now

I found you through someone else's Blogroll on their blog. There are so many beauty bloggers out there! I follow around 160 blogs. That's a lot of reading but I love it. I love reading your posts! :)

I found you through other blog.

I wish I have more time to check out more blogs than I already have. Blame it to current living arrangement and hubby hogging the laptop! Should be better once we settle down somewhere.

This is an interesting topic. I find blogs from the comment section as well as via blog rolls. I do tend to google items to see if anyone has written about it and if I like the blog then I add it to my google reader. I also use twitter a lot to source new blogs; retweet is a god send as well as Follow Fridays.

Great post!
Now, I really don't remember how I stumbled across your blog, I think you followed me first, but in any case, I 'm glad I found you!

And I agree with you on bloggers including their blog url's on comments.
It's not "greediness/shameless advertising" (and I think it's a bit selfish for anyone to think that, since almost everyone has linked to their blog at some point), in fact it helps me a lot more to link a name to sm1's blog, so I know it's that person instead of sm1 else! Interesting topic though, even though controversial!
